freedom in Christ

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”  Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.  Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.  John 8:31-36

Today is the 4th of July.  Which, in America, means parades, hot dogs, swimming pools and fireworks.  My family and I are spending 2 days in Fort Myers (FL) and we will add some shopping, putt putt and bikes on Sanibel Island to that list (and maybe exchange hot dogs for enchiladas 😊.)   It means that we give thanks for the privilege that we have to live in a country with opportunities such as “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”  It also reminds me of the freedom of religion that we so often take for granted in our country and that many people in countries only a few hours away by airplane have never experienced.

But what it also reminds me of is what I read in the verses above.  Because, I believe, that there are many that have missed out on the Truth that truly sets them free.  Sin, no matter how seemingly great or small, is a master that only Jesus can set us free from.  I was just talking with a friend of mine yesterday about a guy that we have both known for 10+ years.  He has a drug addiction that has put him on the streets, separated from his family and even in the hospital.  A few weeks ago, I went to pray with him in the hospital and by the time he got out, he was back in his bondage to sin (drugs).   The opportunities that he gives up for that temporary high prove that he is a slave.  I have talked to him, prayed for him, prayed WITH him and tried to help him.  But the reality is, this is something he must do.  He has to surrender that addiction to Jesus.

“So if the Son set you free, you will be free indeed.”

Have a great Independence Day- live free!
